Good posture is not easy. In fact, it seems down right almost impossible to have it nowadays with all the time spent on computers, cell phones and tablets. Luckily, we’re here to help with 5 easy ways to fit good posture into your life…and they’re so simple, you’ll be able to easily do them daily.
1. Awareness of Your Posture
This might sound absolutely crazy, but just having awareness of your posture all the time is the first step toward having good posture. Choose a colleague you work closely with on a daily basis to help hold you accountable for your posture and you can do the same for them.
2. Drink Water For Better Posture
Hydration is vital for the body. 60% of the human body is made of water and studies show that being dehydrated leads to irritability, muscle and joint pain, headaches and fatigue. So, drink up! The average person should consume half their body weight in ounces of water per day. Meaning a 200lb person should be drinking 100 oz of water daily, which is about 12-8oz glasses of water, or 8-12oz bottles of water. Don’t like the taste of water? Add fruit like lemons, limes or strawberries to liven it up a bit!
3. Proper Chair and Desk Ergonomics are Essential for Good Posture
Proper ergonomics are VITAL. Ensure your computer is at eye level, your seated properly with your butt back in the chair and feet on the floor. Also, consider investing in a standing desk. Stay tuned for more elaborate blog posts about proper chair and computer placement!
4. Stretch Every Hour While at Your Desk
We hear it time and again from patients that this is impossible…but nothing is impossible! Set a reminder on your computer or phone every hour to stand up and do a quick 30-second to one minute stretch routine. Studies show moving around while working increases energy and actually makes you more productive than sitting sedentary at your desk all day.
