Health. What does it mean to you? We all know being healthy is important, but HOW do we ‘get healthier?’ Being healthy isn’t always easy, especially in this crazy, busy, fast paced world we live in. Dr. Josh and I have outlined 5 easy, natural ways to improve your health overall.
We call it living the DREAM: Diet, Rest, Exercise, Alignment and a positive Mental attitude! If you can master all 5 of these, you’ll be the healthiest version of yourself!
A Healthy DIET For Better Health
Ok, now I know we all love our vices, whether they be Oreo cookies, cheesecake or pasta, but it’s all about moderation! Have you ever heard the term ‘you are what you eat’? Well, it’s TRUE! If you eat crap, you’re going to feel like crap, it’s that simple. Try to eat a diet FULL of fruits, veggies and lean proteins, it’s really that easy. The best advice someone ever gave me that we’ve used since Grad school is to JUST EAT REAL FOOD. Limit the processed crap that comes in a box, bag or can.
I know you’re busy and it takes time to go to the grocery store, prep food, cook it and clean up. But, you’re health is WORTH IT! Plus, there are now so many ways to help make it more convenient and easier, such as food and grocery delivery services. It’s best to eat clean and healthy all the time, but we like to allow 1-2 ‘cheat’ meals a week, which are meals we really enjoy eating but know we shouldn’t eat regularly (like a bowl of pasta). This satisfies our palate so we don’t feel deprived, yet still remain healthy.
Ample REST For Optimal Health
Sleep is so vital for life and we certainly do not get enough of it. There’s no way to actually catch up on it, either. So don’t think that you can stay up all week and then sleep all weekend. When we get the proper amount of sleep, our body and brain restore and repair, and certain vital hormones are released. If you’re not sleeping enough, then this obviously isn’t taking place, which, over a period of years, can lead to detrimental affects.
The average recommendation for sleep is 7-9 hours per night, depending on the individual. If you’re having trouble sleeping, check out my other Blog Post: 10 Tips For Better Sleep.
EXERCISE For A Long, Healthy Life
Get up and get moving!!! For many of us, our days are spend sedentary at a desk, which can lead to a slew of health issues down the road. I know you’re tired, but you MUST exercise. It may sound ironic, but the more movement you do, the less tired you’ll feel. That’s because when you exercise, it releases endorphins which make you alert, awake, and clear headed. Movement is key to a healthy body…our bodies were designed for movement!
Find a type of exercise that you love to do and that makes you happy, so you don’t DREAD doing it daily. If you hate gyms and running, don’t get a gym membership or run. Take a walk after dinner with the family or head over to Youtube, where you can find every type of exercise video imaginable for free.
ALIGNMENT And Balance For A Healthy Mind & Body
In our culture, when we think of living a healthy life, Diet, Rest and Exercise are always the first things that come to mind. Yet, 0ne of the most vital keys that is constantly neglected is alignment! We NEED to have alignment and balance in our life. Balance with work, family, friends, food…everything! Stress takes such a toll on our bodies, so much so that we may not even notice it. Check out my other Blog Post: 3 Ways Stress Affects Your Body and How To Avoid It, to help bring better balance in your life by reducing stress.
While mental alignment is vital to health, so is physical alignment! Align your body with stretching daily, chiropractic, yoga and pilates. This will prevent injuries for years to come.
A Positive Mental ATTITUDE Is Essential
Do you ever wonder why two people may go through the EXACT same situation and both have a completely different attitude towards it? That’s because one person may be looking at the glass half empty and the other person is viewing as half full! Or do you ever notice that some people are just constantly surrounded by drama and always have something ‘awful’ going on in their lives? Do you think that’s because of everything happening to them or are they creating that environment?
The way we look at things and handle them is so vital to our well being. If you get a flat tire on your way to work, be grateful you didn’t get into a car accident. If the power goes out, be grateful that you have power to begin with! Start and end each day saying something you’re grateful for. You never realize how lucky we are in this life and it needs to be appreciated in order to attract more positive things. A positive mindset yields a positive life!
